We often move through life without clearly understanding what we truly need versus what we simply want. When desires go unmet, we might feel disappointed or frustrated. But when our genuine needs aren't satisfied, we can become physically, emotionally, or mentally incapacitated. Sometimes we don't even recognize what our basic needs are until they're not being met—like realizing you need to feel special and seen when someone forgets your birthday. Today's inspiration invites us to get clear about what we actually need to thrive.
The focus for today is:
Just as sometimes you don't recognize one of your core values until you realize you're not living in alignment with that value, sometimes you don't know what your basic needs are until they are not met.

Barbara Carrellas draws on Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs to remind us that our needs are naturally prioritized. We start with biological needs—oxygen, food, water, sleep—then move to safety and security, love and belonging, respect and esteem, and finally self-actualization: becoming everything we're capable of becoming. Understanding this hierarchy helps us recognize why we react the way we do when certain needs aren't met, and why getting clear about our relational needs—what we need from others when we're in relationship with them—is essential for being loved more easily and effectively.
